The colder months are upon us and with those colder months stiffness and soreness can set in. If you have arthritis, the colder months can pose some challenges with stiffness.  The colder months of 2013 can be a jump-start on 2014 goals if you get movin!  I know the thought of exercise for those who have arthritis can be mind-boggling and maybe even stressful, but a little to lessen your pain may be just what the doctor prescribe.

Medical studies prove that moderate exercise or movement can improve your arthritis. You don’t have to be a sprinter or marathon swimmer to get movin, all you need is a desire to live and be an active participant in LIFE!

According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise arthritis for arthritis sufferers  is a vital part of treatment and can improve your health and fitness without hurting your joints.  According to the Mayo Clinic’s article “Exercise Helps Ease Arthritis Pain and Stiffness” exercise can do the following for those with arthritis:

  • Strengthen the muscles around your joints
  • Help you maintain bone strength
  • Give you more strength and energy to get through the day
  • Make it easier to get a good night’s sleep
  • Help you control your weight
  • Make you feel better about yourself and improve your sense of well-being

Though you might think exercise will aggravate your joint pain and stiffness, that’s not the case. Lack of exercise actually can make your joints even more painful and stiff. That’s because keeping your muscles and surrounding tissue strong is crucial to maintaining support for your bones. Not exercising weakens those supporting muscles, creating more stress on your joints. ~Mayo Clinic  Read more about arthritis and exercise here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/arthritis/AR00009 .
